Brand New on the Inside
When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun!
2 Corinthians 5:17 TLB
There is something undeniably appealing about the idea of a fresh start. A new city, a new neighborhood, a new circle of friends — the chance to leave behind the things that have not been working and build something better in their place. Many of us have chased that feeling at one point or another. Pack up the old life, move somewhere new, and become someone new in the process.
My family tried it. We moved to another state with real hope that the change of scenery would bring a change of habits. For a while, it seemed to be working. Everything felt different — the streets, the faces, the routines. But before long, the new friends turned out to carry the same old habits we had been trying to leave behind. The fresh start we had been counting on turned out to be a change of address and nothing more. The zip code was different. We were not.
What we discovered, slowly and a little painfully, is that real change cannot be packed into a moving box. You cannot leave yourself behind when you relocate. The patterns, the tendencies, the ways of seeing the world — they travel with you, tucked quietly inside, ready to unpack themselves in the new place just as they were in the old one.
Real change begins on the inside. And that is precisely what Jesus offers.
When Paul writes to the Corinthians, he is not describing a self-improvement program or a change of environment. He is describing something far more radical: a new creation. When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. Not reformed. Not relocated. New. The old way of seeing, the old appetites, the old pull toward habits that never truly satisfied — they lose their grip, not because the circumstances changed, but because the person on the inside has been made new.
This is the transformation that no move can manufacture. Old habits no longer satisfy the way they once did, because the person who found satisfaction in them is no longer quite the same person. You begin to see the world differently — not because the world has changed, but because the world within you has. You find yourself wanting things you never wanted before: peace, purpose, the presence of God, the fullness of everything His kingdom has to offer.
A new address gives you a new location. Jesus gives you a new life. And a new life, it turns out, is the only fresh start that actually sticks.
Reflections
Have you ever tried to change your circumstances hoping it would change you — only to find the same patterns following you to the new place? In what areas of your life have you experienced the inside-out transformation that only God can bring? Is there something today you are still trying to change from the outside in, that you might instead bring to Jesus?
Prayer
Lord, thank You that You do not just rearrange the furniture of our lives — You make us new from the inside out. Forgive me for the times I have looked for a fresh start in the wrong places, hoping that changing my surroundings would change my heart. Do what only You can do: renew me on the inside. Let the old habits and old appetites lose their hold, and fill me with a hunger for everything Your kingdom has to offer. Help me to live today as the brand new person You have made me to be. In Jesus Name, Amen.
