Encouragement

Precious to God

"Don't be afraid," he said, "for you are very precious to God. Peace! Be encouraged! Be strong!" As he spoke these words to me, I suddenly felt stronger and said to him, "Please speak to me, my lord, for you have strengthened me."

Daniel 10:19 NLT

Pay attention to how you talk to yourself today.

Not the words you say out loud, but the ones that run quietly in the background — the commentary that plays beneath every challenge, every setback, every moment when the outcome feels uncertain. That internal voice is shaping more than you might realize. It is influencing your confidence, your courage, your willingness to try, and your ability to keep going when things get hard.

For many of us, that voice is not particularly kind. When circumstances feel unsettling, it does not offer reassurance — it offers a list of reasons why things are going to go wrong. When a challenge feels too large, it does not remind us of past victories — it reminds us of past failures. When we feel alone in something difficult, it does not point us toward help — it tells us there is no help to be found. Self-doubt arrives, and the spiral begins. Fear leads to confusion, confusion leads to discouragement, and discouragement, left unchecked, opens the door to something darker.

Daniel knew that spiral. He had been in a season of mourning and fasting for three weeks, troubled by a vision he did not fully understand, worn down by the weight of what he had seen. When the heavenly messenger finally appeared to him, Daniel was so overwhelmed he had no strength left. He fell face down. He could barely speak.

And the first thing the messenger said to him was not an explanation or an instruction. It was an identity statement.

You are very precious to God.

Before anything else — before the encouragement to be strong, before the call not to fear, before any word about what Daniel was supposed to do next — God made sure Daniel knew how He saw him. Precious. Valued. Known. Not despite his weakness in that moment, but in the middle of it. Daniel was face down, depleted, and afraid — and God called him precious.

Notice what happened next. As the messenger spoke those words, Daniel felt stronger. He did not feel stronger because his circumstances changed. The vision was still troubling. The weight was still real. What changed was the voice he was hearing. And that voice — the voice of God speaking identity and worth over a depleted soul — did what no amount of self-motivation could do. It lifted him.

This is why the words we speak to ourselves matter so much. When our internal voice echoes the enemy's script — you are not enough, there is no way through, no one is coming — it depletes us the same way Daniel was depleted. But when we begin to replace that script with what God actually says about us, something shifts. Not because we have talked ourselves into feeling better, but because we are agreeing with a truth that is more real than our fear.

You are precious to God. That is not a motivational phrase. It is a declaration from the One who made you, knows you completely, and has never once reconsidered His love for you.

When the spiral starts today — and for some of us, it already has — pause. Let God interrupt the voice that is pulling you down. Hear what He says instead. Peace. Be encouraged. Be strong.

Those words strengthened Daniel. They will strengthen you too.

Reflections

What does your self-talk sound like when you are facing something difficult or uncertain? Is it more aligned with fear and self-doubt, or with what God says about you? Take a moment today to identify one negative thing you have been telling yourself and replace it with a specific truth from Scripture. What changes when you let God's voice be louder than your own fear?

Prayer

Lord, I confess that I do not always speak kindly to myself. When fear comes, I listen to the wrong voice — the one that tells me I am not enough, that there is no way through, that I am alone in this. Forgive me for agreeing with those lies. Today I want to hear what You say instead. You call me precious. You speak peace over my confusion, encouragement over my discouragement, and strength over my weakness. I receive those words right now. Just as Daniel was lifted by a word from You, lift me today. Quiet the spiral. Renew my outlook. Remind me of who I am in Your eyes — not because of what I have done, but because of how You see me. Speak, Lord. I am listening. In Jesus Name, Amen.
