Made in His Image
Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Genesis 1:26 NIV
There is something quietly remarkable about watching a child walk into a room and seeing their parent in the way they carry themselves. It might be the tilt of the head, the particular laugh, the way they pause before they speak. Sometimes it is more than features — it is a manner, a warmth, a way of seeing the world that was passed down without anyone trying to teach it. The child simply absorbed it, because that is what children do. They bear the image of the ones who made them.
This is exactly the picture God had in mind when He spoke the words of Genesis 1:26.
Before He formed the mountains or set the stars in their courses, before He filled the seas or breathed life into the creatures of the earth, God paused and said something He had not said about anything else He made: let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness. Not in the image of the animals. Not in the pattern of the sky or the sea. In His image. In His likeness. You were the only part of creation that God looked at and said — I want this to look like Me.
And just as a child inherits not only the features of their parents but also their name, their legacy, and everything they have built — so God entrusted His creation to the ones He made in His image. He did not hand the world over to the strongest creature or the most ancient force. He handed it to you. He gave you authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, every living thing that moves on the earth. That is not a small assignment. That is a mandate from the Creator of everything, given to you with full confidence that you could carry it.
Think about what that means. God looked at you — knowing every limitation, every weakness, every moment of self-doubt that would ever cross your mind — and said: I trust you with this. I made you for this. You are enough for this.
Whenever I feel inadequate — and there are days when that feeling arrives before I have even finished my morning coffee — I come back to this verse. Not because it tells me I am perfect, but because it tells me who made me and what He had in mind when He did. I was not an afterthought. I was not assembled carelessly. I was fashioned deliberately, in the image of God Himself, and sent into the world to reflect His character and exercise His authority in the places He has placed me.
You carry the family resemblance of heaven. When God looks at you, He sees the image He intended. And He has never once doubted that you are more than enough to fulfill the mandate He placed in your hands.
Reflections
In what areas of your life do you most struggle to feel adequate? How does it change your perspective to know that God assigned you authority and responsibility not despite your limitations, but with full knowledge of them — and still said you were enough? What would it look like today to live as someone made in the image of God?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the extraordinary truth that You made me in Your image. When I feel small or inadequate, remind me that You did not make a mistake when You made me. You fashioned me deliberately, entrusted me with purpose, and placed Your own likeness in me. Help me to walk today in the confidence of that identity — not in pride, but in the quiet assurance that I was made by You, for You, and that You have equipped me for every responsibility You have placed in my hands. In Jesus Name, Amen.
