Faith

Stuff Happens

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Romans 12:11–13 NIV

There are a lot of things we cannot control in life. We are going to encounter disappointment. Our bodies will get sick. We will face temptation. Relationships will disappoint us, plans will fall apart, and circumstances will not always cooperate with our hopes. Stuff happens.

But here is the truth Paul wants us to hold onto: while we cannot control what comes at us, we can absolutely control what we choose to do in the midst of it. Our attitude will determine our next step. And the attitude God calls us to is not passive resignation — it is active, Spirit-fueled zeal.

Never be lacking in zeal. Keep your spiritual fervor. These are not suggestions for easy seasons; they are instructions for every season, especially the hard ones. Zeal is not a feeling that arrives on its own. It is a choice to stay engaged with God even when life feels discouraging. It is deciding to serve, to hope, and to pray when everything in you wants to give up.

Staying hopeful, patient, and prayerful keeps us motivated and joyful. When I have a joyful heart, I am not ignoring my problems — I am looking beyond them, toward the Lord for guidance and strength. Joy is not the absence of trouble; it is the presence of God in the middle of trouble.

And something remarkable happens when we stay connected to God through the hard things: our own needs begin to be met in ways we did not expect. When the Lord fills us, we naturally have more to give. We become more aware of others around us who are struggling. We find ourselves ready to share, to welcome, and to practice the kind of hospitality that reflects the generosity of God.

Today, whatever you are facing, choose your attitude. Choose hope. Choose patience. Choose prayer. Let God meet you there, and watch how He uses even your hard season to make you a blessing to someone else.

Reflections

What circumstance in your life right now feels most out of your control? How might choosing hope, patience, and faithful prayer shift your perspective on it? Is there someone around you whose need you could meet once you have brought your own burden to the Lord?

Prayer

Father, I cannot control everything that comes my way, but I can choose to keep my eyes on You. Help me never to lose my zeal for You, even in the hard and discouraging seasons. Fill me with joy that looks beyond my problems and finds You in the middle of them. Teach me to be patient, to stay faithful in prayer, and to trust that You are working. And when You meet my needs, make me generous and hospitable to those around me who are hurting. In Jesus Name, Amen.
