Identity

You Are Mine

But now, this is what the Lord says — he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: 'Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.'

Isaiah 43:1 NIV

A person's identity can be many things to many people. I am my parents' child, my husband's wife, my children's mother, my boss's employee, or my employees' boss. Through the years, my roles have all defined who I am and what I do. My identity is also a collection of my values and beliefs — the things I hold dear, the convictions I live by, the character I have worked to build. All of these characteristics distinguish and identify me as the person I want to be or have chosen to become.

And yet, as layered and meaningful as all of those identities are, none of them is the deepest or most enduring one.

Isaiah 43 opens with God speaking directly to His people — people who were weary, displaced, and uncertain of their future. He does not begin with a command or a correction. He begins with a reminder of who they are to Him. He says: I created you. I formed you. I have redeemed you. I have called you by name. You are mine.

Those words were not just for ancient Israel. They are for every person who has chosen to walk with God. They are for you.

Isaiah reminded the Israelites of their existence and who was their Redeemer. They were part of the family of God and subject to His provisions. That reminder was not merely historical — it was deeply personal. And it became a mirror for my own journey.

I made a decision early in life that I wanted to be part of the life of Jesus. At the age of twelve, I accepted Jesus as my Savior. At twenty-two, I made Him Lord of my life. Those two moments — separated by a decade of growing up — represent the deepest anchors of who I am. Every role I have carried since then, every title, every relationship, every season of change, has been held within that larger identity: I belong to God.

Who we identify with shapes how our uniqueness is formed and how we are recognized. When our identity is rooted in Christ, we do not have to fear what we lose or what changes. Roles shift. Seasons end. Relationships evolve. But the One who called you by name does not change, and His claim on your life does not expire.

Today, no matter what role you are carrying or what season you are in, hear the voice of the One who formed you: Do not fear. I have redeemed you. I have called you by name. You are mine.

Reflections

How do you most often define yourself — by your roles, your relationships, your accomplishments, or your values? How does it change your perspective to know that God calls you by name and claims you as His own? Is there a fear or uncertainty in your life right now that this truth speaks directly to?

Prayer

Father, thank You for knowing me by name — not just who I am to others, but who I am to You. When my roles shift and my seasons change, remind me that my deepest identity is rooted in You. You created me, You formed me, You redeemed me, and You have called me Your own. Let that truth be the foundation I stand on today and every day. I choose to place my identity in You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
