Encouragement

You Are Never Truly Alone

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.

Deuteronomy 31:6 NIV

Loneliness is one of the more disorienting feelings we carry, because it does not always make sense by the world's logic. You can be surrounded by people — at a gathering, in a room full of conversation and laughter — and still feel completely alone. No one seems to be speaking your language. You have nothing to add, no thread to pull, no one who seems to see you. The crowd is full and you are somehow empty inside it.

Or perhaps the loneliness is quieter than that. It is the absence of a sympathetic friend — someone who would truly listen without rushing to fix things. It is the lack of a companion who knows your name and your story and chooses to stay anyway. These feelings are not imagined. They are real, and they are heavy, and they do not lift simply because someone reminds you that you are technically not alone in the room.

What has always steadied me is remembering that even Jesus felt this. The Gospels do not hide it. There was the night in Gethsemane when He asked His closest friends to stay awake with Him, and they fell asleep. There was the cry from the cross — My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? — a moment of such raw isolation that it has echoed through centuries. Jesus, fully God and fully human, knew what it was to feel abandoned. He did not stand at a safe distance from loneliness and offer advice about it. He entered it.

And because He entered it, I know that when loneliness finds me, I am not alone even in that feeling. He has been there. He understands it from the inside.

But there is more than understanding on offer. When Moses spoke these words to Israel — be strong and courageous, do not be afraid — he was not asking them to manufacture courage out of nothing. He was pointing them to a reason for courage: the LORD your God goes with you. Not ahead of you, waiting at the destination. Not behind you, watching from a distance. With you. Present. Moving when you move, staying when you stay, accompanying you into every room and every season and every interior place where loneliness tries to take hold.

He will never leave you nor forsake you. That is not a conditional promise. It does not depend on how you feel in the moment or whether the room is full or empty. It holds in the crowd where no one sees you. It holds in the quiet where no one comes. It holds in the emotional wilderness where you cannot find your footing.

You are not alone. Not physically, and not emotionally. God is with you — and He always will be.

Reflections

Have you ever felt lonely in a crowd, or in a season of life when you expected to feel connected? How does it change the weight of loneliness to know that Jesus Himself experienced isolation — and that God's promise to never leave you covers not just your circumstances but your feelings? Where do you need to receive that promise today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that You do not ask me to pretend loneliness away. You know what it feels like from the inside, and You meet me there. Remind me today that Your promise to never leave me or forsake me is not just for the easy moments — it is for the crowded rooms where I feel invisible, and the quiet places where I feel forgotten. Be near to me in a way I can sense. Help me to be strong and courageous, not because I have manufactured it myself, but because You are with me. In Jesus Name, Amen.
