The Pursuit Is the Point

For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Matthew 7:8 NIV

Jesus did not say some who ask receive, or occasionally the one who seeks finds. He said everyone. The promise is as wide as the pursuit. What limits the answer is never God's willingness — it is our willingness to keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking.

There is something important in the progression of those three words. Asking is the beginning — it is recognizing that we need something we do not have and being willing to say so. Seeking is more active — it means we are not just waiting for the answer to find us, we are moving toward it. And knocking carries a kind of boldness, a willingness to stand at a door and make our presence known, to say I am here and I am not leaving until this opens.

Together they paint a picture of pursuit. And pursuit is what separates a passing wish from a genuine desire.

We cannot find something we are not looking for. That sounds simple, but it is worth sitting with. How often do we want an answer but never actually go looking for one? How often do we hope a situation will resolve itself without ever bringing it before God in serious, sustained prayer? The promise of this verse is not passive — it is an invitation to engage. To show up. To be the kind of person who asks, and keeps asking, because the answer matters enough to pursue.

It is our passion that sustains the pursuit. When we truly need something — direction for a decision, peace in the middle of uncertainty, wisdom for a relationship, strength for a season we did not choose — that need itself becomes the fuel that keeps us returning to God. We knock because we have to. We seek because we cannot afford not to.

And this is exactly what prayer is. Not a formality. Not a ritual we perform to check a box. Prayer is pursuing God for the truth of the matter — for His perspective on what we are facing, for His direction when the path is unclear, for His solutions when our own have run out. The time we spend with Him is where clarity lives. It is where the noise of everything else quiets down enough for us to hear what is actually true.

The door does not open on its own. But for the one who knocks — it will be opened. That is not a maybe. That is a promise from the One who has never broken one.

Reflections

Is there something you have been hoping for but have not truly pursued in prayer? What would it look like to move from wishing to asking, from wondering to seeking, from waiting to knocking — and to do it with the kind of passion that does not give up? What truth might God be waiting to show you in the time you spend with Him?

Prayer

Lord, I come to You today not just with words but with pursuit. You have promised that everyone who asks receives, that the one who seeks finds, that the door opens for the one who knocks. I want to be that person — the one who comes to You seriously, consistently, and with a heart that believes You are worth pursuing. Teach me to pray with passion and not just habit. Show me the truth of the matters I am carrying. I trust that the answers I need are found in You. In Jesus Name, Amen.
