The Power of a Praying Believer
"Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results."
James 5:16 NIV
There is a tendency, when we are facing something hard, to feel like prayer is the least we can do. We want to act. We want to fix it. We want to find the solution that makes the problem go away. And when we cannot, we say — almost apologetically — "Well, I'll pray for you."
James 5:16 wants to completely reframe that.
Prayer is not the consolation prize when action fails. It is not a polite gesture or a spiritual formality. According to James, the earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. The word translated as great power in the original language carries the idea of something forceful, effective, energetic — prayer that is alive and working. This is not passive language. This is the language of something that moves.
When you bring a person, a situation, a stronghold before God in prayer, you are not simply expressing a wish. You are invoking the power of the living God into that circumstance. You are pulling heaven into contact with earth. You are releasing a force that is not limited by what limits you — not by the diagnosis, not by the broken relationship, not by the financial wall, not by the years the enemy has had a foothold.
Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:4 that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. Prayer is one of those weapons. When a believer prays earnestly — not casually, not as a ritual, but with genuine faith and righteous intent — strongholds come down. Things that have been entrenched begin to move. Situations that looked immovable become subject to the God who moves mountains.
And notice what James says prayer does: it heals. Not just physically, though that is included. The healing James describes is whole — it touches the body, the soul, the relationship, the situation. Prayer blesses everyone it touches. The one praying is drawn closer to God. The one being prayed for is covered by grace. The relationship between them is deepened by the act of carrying one another before the throne.
You may be the only person praying for someone in your life right now. Do not let that discourage you — let it fuel you. One righteous, earnest believer on their knees is not a small thing. It is a powerful thing. It is a world-changing thing.
Never underestimate the power of a praying believer. Never underestimate the power of your prayer.
Reflections
Is there someone in your life — or a situation — that you have been treating as beyond help, or that you have been trying to fix entirely in your own strength? What would it look like to bring it before God today with earnest, expectant faith rather than as a last resort? Who can you commit to praying for consistently this week?
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I have treated prayer as a last resort instead of my first response. Your Word tells me that my earnest prayer has great power — that it produces wonderful results. I take You at Your word today. I bring before You every stronghold, every situation that feels immovable, every person I love who needs Your touch. Unleash Your strength and power on their behalf. Let my prayers be mighty. Let them move heaven. I will not stop, and I will not underestimate what You can do when I call on Your name. In Jesus Name, Amen.
