Your Unfailing Love Supported Me

When I said, "My foot is slipping," your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.

Psalm 94:18–19 NIV

There is a moment most of us know well — the moment when the ground beneath us feels less certain than it did before. It may come as a wave of anxiety in the middle of the night, or as the slow realization that something we were counting on is no longer holding. The psalmist names it plainly: my foot is slipping. Not a dramatic fall, but that unsettling sensation of losing your footing, of reaching for something solid and finding it less stable than you hoped.

And in that moment, the Lord's unfailing love stepped in. Not with a lecture or a list of instructions, but with support. A steadying hand. A presence that held the psalmist up when he could not hold himself. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. Not the absence of anxiety — the anxiety was still great — but in the middle of it, comfort arrived. Joy broke through, not because the circumstances changed, but because someone cared enough to stay close.

When a friend is hurting — whether the pain is physical or emotional — I find myself wanting to do something. The instinct to help is good and right. But I have learned that what people most need in those moments is rarely a solution. It is a presence. A listening ear that does not rush to fix or minimize. A meal that says, without words, I thought of you today. A tidy room that lifts one small burden from someone who has no energy left for small burdens. Or simply showing up and staying — being there for whatever is needed, without an agenda.

I cannot always bring the healing someone desires. That is in God's hands, not mine. But I can be attentive. I can pay attention to what a person actually needs rather than what is easiest for me to give. And in doing so, I can reflect something of the way God comforts us — not from a distance, not with conditions, but with steady, unfailing love that shows up and stays.

There is something deeply comforting about knowing someone cares. It does not erase the pain, but it changes the experience of it. You are not alone in this. Someone sees you. Someone is here. That is the consolation the psalmist received from God, and it is the consolation we are invited to pass on to one another.

Today, think of someone whose foot may be slipping. You may not be able to fix what they are facing. But you can be present. You can listen. You can show up. That simple act of care — offered in love — can bring more comfort than you know.

Reflections

Is there someone in your life right now who is struggling — physically, emotionally, or both? What is one practical way you could be present for them this week? How has God's comfort reached you in a difficult season, and how might you pass that same comfort along to someone else?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the times You have caught me when my foot was slipping — for the unfailing love that has held me up when I could not hold myself. When anxiety has been great within me, You have brought consolation and joy. Help me to be that kind of presence for the people around me. Give me eyes to see who is hurting, ears to truly listen, and a willing heart to show up in whatever way is needed. Let Your comfort flow through me to others. In Jesus Name, Amen.
