His Way Out

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT

Nobody becomes a believer and immediately stops being tempted. If anything, the moment you commit to living differently is often the moment the pull toward old habits feels strongest. The enemy does not waste his effort on people who are already going his direction. He reserves his most persistent pressure for those who have decided to go another way.

Paul knew this. Writing to the church in Corinth — a city that offered no shortage of temptations — he did not pretend that believers were somehow exempt from the struggle. He said plainly: the temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. There is something quietly comforting in that. You are not uniquely weak. You are not failing in some way that other believers are not. The struggle you are in is a human struggle, and you are not alone in it.

But Paul does not stop at the shared experience of temptation. He pivots immediately to the character of God. And God is faithful. That pivot is everything. The temptation is real — and so is the God who stands between you and being overwhelmed by it. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. And when it comes, He will show you a way out.

I know what that way out can look like, because I have lived it.

For years I was a heavy smoker. I knew it was not good for me. I wanted to stop. But wanting to stop and being able to stop were two very different things. The cravings were stronger than my willpower, and willpower alone was never going to be enough. On the night of my baptism, I smoked a cigarette after dinner and prayed that it would be my last. I asked God to help me in a way I could not help myself.

The next day, riding in a car filled with cigarette smoke from my co-workers, something unusual happened. I could see the smoke — but I could not smell it. The craving that had controlled me for years simply was not there. God had made a way out, and it did not look anything like what I would have designed. I had expected a battle. What I got was a quiet miracle. And I have not smoked since.

That is the thing about God's way out — it does not always come in the form we expect. Sometimes it is a sudden removal of the craving. Sometimes it is a person who calls at exactly the right moment. Sometimes it is a scripture that rises up in your memory just as the temptation peaks. Sometimes it is a door that closes before you can walk through it. The method varies. The faithfulness behind it does not.

What God requires from us is not perfection. It is submission. A willingness to say: I cannot do this on my own, and I am not going to try. Show me Your way out, and I will take it.

When we submit to His way — even when it looks different from what we expected, even when it feels small or quiet or almost too simple — the result is always the same.

Victory.

Reflections

Is there a temptation you have been trying to overcome through willpower alone? What would it look like to stop straining against it in your own strength and instead ask God to show you His way out? Reflect on a time when God made a way for you that you did not expect. How does remembering that faithfulness change the way you face the temptation in front of you today?

Prayer

Lord, I am grateful that You do not ask me to face temptation alone. You are faithful — and Your faithfulness means that no temptation I encounter is bigger than Your ability to make a way through it. Forgive me for the times I have relied on my own willpower and come up short. Today I submit this struggle to You. I do not know what Your way out will look like, but I trust that You will show me. Open my eyes to see it. Give me the courage to take it. And remind me, when the pressure feels strong, that You have never once left a believer without a way to endure. I choose Your way. I trust Your faithfulness. I receive Your victory. In Jesus Name, Amen.
